History
It was the Great Depression when Henry “H.D.” Tanner made his way from PA to FL for a temporary job selling bankrupted paint stock. Temporary became permanent when, in 1933, H.D. founded Tanner Paint Company in downtown Tampa. A true entrepreneur, H.D. was the driving force behind the Tanner label, teaching himself to make paint tailored for the Florida climate, and partnering with Benjamin Moore Paints, a relationship that endures to this day.
Son Jack took over the business upon H.D.’s death in 1955. Jack expanded production of the Tanner label and managed Tanner Paint through several moves until 1965, when he built the current store on N. Armenia Avenue. He watched the pastures of West Tampa grow alongside Tanner Paint, ushering in new businesses & customers. Staying true to H.D.’s vision, Tanner Paint remained a family store, with Jack’s mother, Lillis, keeping the books until her 90’s.
Jack’s son, Steven, grew up at Tanner Paint working on weekends, holidays, and summer breaks. After graduating from college in 1973, Steven joined the company full-time as Tanner Paint’s 3rd generation and worked alongside his father for 30 years. With each new era, they held on to H.D.’s core value of family over fortune, never letting go of loyal employees and supporting painters with in-house credit.
In 2003, Steven’s son Walker became the 4th generation Tanner at the helm. As ambitious as his great-grandfather, Walker has positioned Tanner Paint for the future upgrading technologies, streamlining operations, remodeling the store, and forming new partnerships.
At Tanner Paint, we hold on to the values that have always guided us: family, service, and integrity. We cherish our customers, longstanding employees, and the painters & neighborhoods that have always supported us. We love what we do.
Through the generations, we’ve worked hard to build a company that we’re proud of. We're excited about Tanner Paint’s future as the 5th generation of Tanners grows up in our store.
